During the month of May KMOS-PBS explores some of the ways that the disease of opioid addiction has affected our communities. Each Tuesday night at 8:00 we will broadcast different programs on the topic from across the country, leading up to May 27 when we will premiere a special documentary focusing on families in the region.
It began with an overview of the crisis (7 Days: The Opioid Crisis) airing May 6, followed the next week on May 13 by two programs that feature people working to save addicts: Opioids and First Responders and Independent Lens: Love in the Time of Fentanyl, a cinema-verité style documentary view of the Overdose Prevention Society in Vancouver, Canada. On May 20 we explore the effects of the disease and challenges faced by women who are addicted (Attention Must Be Paid: Women Lost In The Opioid Crisis.)
Then on May 27, all of primetime is devoted to the topic beginning with 7 Days: The Opioid Crisis, which sets the stage for the KMOS production of Fentanyl and Families in the Midwest: The Devastating Impact of Opioids. This program is a raw and eye-opening look into the deeply emotional struggles of families living in the aftermath of fentanyl-induced tragedy across Missouri, Kansas and Illinois. Rounding out the night is a profile of counseling centers in Virginia struggling to support recovering addicts, and of an artist creating portraits of overdose victims in Kentucky.
These programs will be broadcast again on both KMOS 6.1 and on KMOS Emerge 6.3. In addition they will be available through the PBS App.
