One in a Million
In July 2025, Congress passed the Recissions Act, eliminating $1.1 million in previously approved federal funding for public media through the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. Nearly 40% of our annual operating budget disappeared seemingly overnight. This impact threatens the local programming that educates our future generations and obstructs trusted resources from entering the community, which is why we are launching the One in a Million campaign, an effort to increase our community membership to 10,000 supporters, representing just 1% of the people who receive our signal. While 1% may sound modest, the impact would be transformational for KMOS PBS.
When news of the funding loss spread, our community responded with generosity and encouragement. Donations of every size began pouring in, along with handwritten notes, phone calls, and words of support that lifted our spirits at KMOS during this time of uncertainty. Our viewers, members, and local businesses stepped up in ways that meant the most to us during this difficult time. Many supporters gave for the very first time. At the same time, loyal members increased their contributions to help sustain the programming they value most. Because of this community, KMOS was not defined by what we lost, but by the people who stood beside us.
“KMOS was not defined by what we lost, but by the people who stood beside us.”
Every day, more than one million people across central Missouri can access KMOS’ trusted programming, educational resources, and local storytelling. Our One in a Million campaign focuses on bringing the community together because public media has a place for everyone. From children discovering the joy of learning through PBS Kids to families gathering for meaningful local programming and educational documentaries. Our station reaches homes, classrooms, and communities throughout the region. Yet despite serving such a large audience, only a small fraction of those viewers currently support KMOS as contributing members.
Every member plays a vital role in protecting the future of public media in our region. Each contribution helps fund our one-of-a-kind local programming. In a time when public media faces growing challenges, membership is more than a donation; it is a statement that community-focused television deserves to thrive. Together, one member at a time, we can ensure KMOS PBS remains a strong independent resource for generations to come.
