If you worked for or with Fred Hunt, you know just how special he was as a person, a colleague, a boss, mentor and friend. Fred had an outstanding, rock-solid career here at KMOS-TV and provided leadership to hundreds of student assistants as our operations manager for more than 26 years. With his staff of students, he made sure KMOS was always on the air. We never skipped a beat with Fred operating our master control room.

When he died so suddenly at age 51, many of you asked what you could do to create a lasting memory of him here at KMOS-TV. Thanks to a lead gift from 1984 graduate Dan Stark, one of Fred's former students, we have started a scholarship in his honor with the UCM Foundation.

The Fred Hunt Public Broadcasting Scholarship honors the significant contributions that Fred made toward developing public broadcasting here at UCM. It honors his commitment and dedication to growing and fostering new careers in broadcast and related fields. The scholarship will be awarded to a part-time or full-time junior or senior in good academic standing, who works as a volunteer or paid assistant at KMOS-TV- preferably in master control, has shown dependable and valuable service to the station, and demonstrates leadership and academic ability in the field of public broadcasting. We plan to award the scholarship for the first time in April at the KMOS-TV Community Advisory Board Meeting.

We need your help - and your generous support - to build the scholarship into an endowment, creating a permanent legacy for Fred. Dan gave $3,000 to start the scholarship. With your financial help, we must raise another $17,000 to make it into an endowment. An endowed scholarship would be a lasting legacy to Fred since only the interest is used to fund an annual award. In that way, the scholarship will remind us every year of Fred's remarkable qualities and contributions.

Please make a generous contribution in honor of our unforgettable friend, Fred Hunt. As we paid homage to Fred during and after his passing in 2008, many of you shared your memories of what made him so special. "His warm, friendly smile. His welcoming attitude. His encouragement. His understanding. He was a good person, good friend, good mentor, good teacher." Please help us reach this important goal to create this lasting legacy.
